AAS 389 - Black Conscious to Afrofuture

Buffalo State | Spring 2018
January 29, 2018 —
In this course, we will embark on a journey through a specific branch of science fiction and fantasy: Afro-futurism. Over the course of our semester, we will look at fiction, film, music, art and history. We will explore African, African-American, black, queer and feminist visions of the future. Our readings will take us from the end of the 19th century to the far future and back. Our travels will lead us through some of the most important ideological, philosophical and ethical movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including Civil Rights, Black Power, Post-humanism, Surrealism, Post-colonialism, third wave feminism, Third World Solidarity and digital humanism. And we will examine these philosophies and movements through the prism of the future—of an afro-future. What exactly will the future look like? What will people look like fifty, one hundred or one thousand years from now? How, in particular, do people of color make use of fantasy and science fiction to re-envision the world? Fueled with knowledge of the past and inspired by hope for a different future, afro-futurism offers us a lens through which we can see our present in a new light.
