When you hear the label “African-American,” what country pops into your head? Many people think of the United States. But did you know that more than fifty percent of Brazil’s population identifies as being of African descent? And most inhabitants of the Caribbean islands also identify as Afro-descendant or of mixed race? In fact, only about ten percent of the twelve million enslaved Africans who made the Middle Passage actually ended up in the United States. Forty percent went to regions in South America, and a little over forty-five percent went to the Caribbean islands. So why does the study of African-American culture and history focus almost exclusively on the United States?
